The titular sport is loosely inspired by American football, but is most certainly its own entity loose balls lie on the field until picked up, there are no field goals, and brutally murdering the opposing players is legal (and indeed, encouraged). Like its predecessors, Blood Bowl 3 skillfully adapts the tabletop game using the most recent ruleset, taking care of the bookkeeping so the player can focus on the action. Gameplay The field is about to get another stain. I recently had the opportunity to participate in the closed beta for the third iteration of Blood Bowl‘s digital version by Cyanide Games, getting an early look at what works – and what doesn’t. Blood Bowl, their Warhammer spinoff where the conflicts of the Old World are resolved in a violent death sport rather than on the battlefield, is one of their longest-standing classics. I’ve been playing Games Workshop’s tabletop games for almost twenty years now, and while they certainly have their flaws they’re always fun to play and full of flavor. Oh, there are also now things like Discord, which to me at least, make a huge difference to the enjoyment of the game and league experience.Another season of the Old World’s favorite pastime begins… Overall it is (from memory) a lot better than BB1, but of course Cyanide so could still be better! They have also put in some custom teams (amalgamations of races) which are horribly imbalanced but fun for a one off thing. So as Tys says, you can create a NAF tourney should you so wish. You can also choose resurrection format, custom teams, experienced or rookie teams, etc. From playing around with it you get the option to have either round robin, ladder, Swiss, or knockout. I've not created my own leagues so I think the above is correct. This can be done within the overall league though. I don't think cross division match play is possible, other than creating a separate division for that and having teams jump back and forth between the divs. I think you can have teams within divisions play more than once yes You can create a division within the league in an eg round robin format, then create a new division and switch the playoff teams to it in a knockout format, easy to do though Having said that, to answer your questions Īny league can have 1 to a lot of admins, so no reason why one league with multiple divisions cannot be adminned by 1 person The admin tools still kind of suck tbh, that is one thing that hopefully gets improved if BB3 ever comes along. More questions to come as I think of them. Is this still the case?Īlso, let's say, purely hypothetically, someone wanted to create a league with divisions and playoffs, that could be done in a single format before, is that still possible?Īnd in such a hypothetical league could teams within divisions play just once against each other or twice? I seem to recall BB1 had the option to do either one or two matches against each opponent in your division, but I might be misremembering.Īnd finally (and most doubtfully), have any new options been added, for example cross-divisional match play (a la NFL) for example?Īll purely speculative at this point, I'm just curious if and how things have evolved and if they are any easier. So, as I'm pottering about the forums, getting back up to speed, I'm wondering how much BB2 offers in terms of league types and admin tools.īack in BB1 there were a few league formats available, but generally the number of teams was a limiting factor in the choice available and many leagues ended up with separate divisions administered separately.
